the wannabe swami

If you haven’t had a chance to check out a Life Alive restaurant yet, you’ve got to try some of their healthy and tasty vegetarian cuisine!  They have locations in Cambridge, Lowell, and Salem, Mass.

Here’s my attempt at a knockoff of my favorite Life Alive dish, “The Swami”

the wannabe swami

The Wannabe Swami

Serves 4:

4 big handfuls of kale
1/2 cup tamari almonds
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 package broccoli slaw
1-2 cups broccoli

Steam everything above until desired tenderness, then mix in curry miso sauce and warm up if necessary if dressing is coming from the fridge.

curry miso sauce

Curry miso sauce*:

Makes 1 cup

2 tsp fresh ginger
2 lg garlic cloves
2 Tbs miso paste (white miso)
1 ½ Tbs honey**
1 tsp curry powder
1/3 cup rice vinegar
1/3 cup cold water
½ cup canola or other oil

Combine the sauce ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until smooth. Serve or refrigerate until needed.

(for 4 servings I would probably use all of it.)

Optional – May add 1 hard boiled egg to each plate for protein
Serve over quinoa with a sprinkle of nutritional yeast

*Can also be used as salad dressing and stored in the fridge up to one week.

** Could substitute agave to make this recipe vegan

Hi Andrea! I made a version of this yesterday and when I was trying to find the original link via google, I came across your version! I’ll definitely be trying yours next time. Life Alive is amazingly delicious.

How cool that you came across my blog! Heads up, since I posted this, I heard there is also Nama Shoyu in the sauce. And possibly Mirin instead of rice vinegar. But overall this recipe is good, I make it all the time. Often I just keep the sauce in the fridge, and use it on a little steamed kale when I want to get my greens. Thanks for reading and commenting!

  2. I am so happy to have found your recipe for this! This is my favorite dish at Life Alive and it’s awesome that I can recreate it at home. Thank you so much. :)

I hope you enjoy it! It’s funny, I had the Swami at Life Alive over the weekend and I was thinking that theirs tastes pretty different than mine. But mine is still good!! :) I think theirs has soy sauce in it…
